ACCRA ZOO
Holidays comes and you
see people trouping in to places of interest just to have a feel of the place,
see new things, make new friends and to enjoy themselves. These people are
called tourists.
Ghana has a lot of
castles, forts, beaches, museums, parks and zoos just to mention a few where
people go to enjoy the history of the country and nature. Almost all the
regions in the country has tourist sites and Accra can’t be left out.
Zoos are fun places to
visit. One is able to see different varieties of animals which amazes children
and adults. The rich vegetation in Ghana has resulted in making it the center
for wild life reserve.
Situated within the
Achimota Forest reserve in the Greater Accra Region is the Accra zoo. The Accra
zoo was at first located at Kanda but in 2006, it was moved from its Kanda
location to pave way for the construction of the Jubilee House. Almost all the
fascinating animals were transferred to the Kumasi zoo.

The walk from the main
entrance to the zoo is not a short one but those determined to get there are
met with a beautiful display of monkeys swinging and ducks bathing in water.

The Accra zoo currently
houses about 100 different animal species. There are ducks, monkeys, a
crocodile, tortoise and a donkey just to mention a few. One good thing about
visiting a zoo is the fact that one gets to see animals that are not commonly
seen.
Contrary to all these,
the journey to the zoo was very hectic even after entering the main gate. There
were no sign posts to direct tourists to the venue. When asked why it is so, a
tour guide explained that after the Accra zoo relocated to the Achimota Forest,
there has been low patronage. The little money acquired from the gate fee being
taken is bumped into repairing the cages and building better ones for the safe
keeping of the animals.
Also, most people
around Achimota do not even know where the zoo is located.
The best way to curb
this problem is when more awareness is created for the location to be known.
The place should also be renovated to be able to keep more fascinating animals
like the lion.
